Sex Offender Charged with Murder Appears in Court
Dated: 05/23/2007 20:55:38

A sex offender is officially charged with strangling a local teen.

47-year old Leonard Dickey was wearing a bullet-proof vest when he made his first appearance in court Wednesday on murder charges.

Only 2News spoke with the prosecutor, seeking justice for the
16-year-old’s murder.

Wayne County Prosecutor, Michael Shipman, charged Dickey for the death of 16-year old Tarra Pickett.

The girl’s body was found Monday night in a wooded area in Cambridge City.

According to court documents, Dickey told police he strangled the girl and led investigators to the area where her body was discovered.

Dickey is no stranger to Indiana authorities. He is listed as a lifetime sex predator on Indiana’s sex offender registry website.

In 1982, Dickey was sentenced to 40 years in an Indiana prison for rape. He was released in October, 2005 after serving 22 years.

Then, in January of this year, Dickey was arrested and charged with three counts of child molestation and with being a repeat sex offender.

Dickey was freed on 50-thousand dollars bond. The Wayne County Prosecutor says that’s in accordance with the law.

Prosecutor, Michael Shipman said, For that particular crime, a class a felony in Indiana, our bail schedule is 25-thousand dollars at the low end and 50-thousand dollars at the high end. So, it was set at the high end of the bail schedule.

Meanwhile, it’s been a tough time for Tarra’s teachers and classmates at Lincoln High School. They’ve set up a makeshift memorial at her locker.

Principal, Mike Cerqua said, Any time as a school person you get a telephone call before six in the morning, it’s usually not a good call.

There will be a memorial for Tarra Pickett Thursday morning at the high school. It gets underway at 7:30 a.m.
